Dan's short resume:
My wife and I moved to Takoma Park, Maryland in 1985. Soon after that I started a tech company (Sligo Computer Services), and co-founded a local paper (The Takoma Voice) and a community non-profit (The Takoma Foundation).
Many wonderful relationships developed over the years, and at Sligo we wrote a ton of custom software and developed some powerful and useful websites.
I sold Sligo Computer Services to the employees in 2005 (we had become a worker's co-op), continued working there for a couple of years, and then off they sailed!
While with Sligo I built an office building in Takoma Park, Maryland. Sligo moved in, as did 14 other tenants. I sold that building on Orchard Avenue in 2021, and helped the new owners manage for some months.
For ten years after Sligo I worked half-time for the Maryland Small Business Development Center as their contract tech person, with an occasional stint as counselor.
In Takoma Park I was an early and active member of the Main Street Business Association, chaired numerous committes, headed up our neighborhood association, and eventually served on the City Council for two terms. I also served on the local food co-op board and have continued to help a series of small business start-ups.
I've worn a creative hat too as a musician, videographer, music teacher, writer and 4th of July float-maker.
The time on the Takoma Park City Council showed me how governments at different levels interact, and gave me experience working toward effective law and policy. The yearly Maryland Municipal League conferences helped me understand challenges across a broader range of cities.
Currently my lovely spouse and I are bi-coastal, as one daughter lives in Washington, D.C. and the other daughter
lives in Washington State near the Canadian border.
